Tried the new Sam's Choice First Harvest Cherry Limeade yesterday. Mmmmm, quite delicious. Found the following three caches today:

Snake TunL (sic)
Betsy's Bridge
It's a BIG.....HOOUUSE! (sic)

Someone generously purchased two DVD videos ("Charlotte's Web 2: Wilbur's Great Adventure" and "Sesame Street: 123 Count With Me") for the kids from our Amazon wishlist. Thank you! Becky and Jared already love them both!

Misti made a wonderful fish dish last night: "Fish Fillets with Crumb Topping" (Great American Recipes, Group 4, Card 42). Mmmmm. Well, I found out the hard way that Freecorder will only record 30 minute MP3's, which I didn't know before. Our last podcast was nearly 33 minutes, so that's why I had to present it in two parts. Lame.

Mentioned in our last podcast:

mypyramid.gov
mypyramidtracker.gov
Wendy's chili finger a hoax (Anna Ayala arrested)
New Pope
DVD's suck
WinXP 64-bit edition
Opera 8 debut (too bad they retracted the headline - look at the article's title bar to see the old headline)
Nex-gen DVD format war
Dual-core chips
Ruminate

We found the 'Duck Poop (updated!)' cache on Saturday while visting the park with Twyla and her kids. I've been enjoying some Aquafina Raspberry Flavor Splash water recently. Mmmmm. I think the "flu" we had might've actually been Norovirus instead (based on the symptoms).

As mentioned in our latest podcast (a two-part piece of hud, see below), I've found the USDA's MyPyramidTracker website (MyPyramidTracker.gov) to be both vastly more informational and vastly funnier than just the regular MyPyramid.gov. Give it a listen:

Show #: 3 (part A)   mp3
Length: 29 minutes, 51 seconds
Bitrate: 64 Kbps
Size: 13.60 MB

Show #: 3 (part B)   mp3
Length: 2 minutes, 50 seconds
Bitrate: 64 Kbps
Size: 1.30 MB

Well, I apologize ahead of time for the poor quality (in audio, in content, and in presentation) of this show. This show has been plagued from the off with all sorts of audio and computer problems. It's a wonder I could even salvage anything from it to post at all - and that's why it took so long to post it (we recorded it on Sunday). You'll probably need to crank the volume to hear anything. And sorry, no cheesey sound effects, either. I know, you're heartbroken.   =(

It's nice to be reminded sometimes that all software has security flaws, not just M&M products (Mozilla and Microsoft). Thus, it's interesting to note the recent RealPlayer security flaw that just made headlines which affected Windows, Macintosh, and Linux versions of the app.

It's been a long time in coming, but the new USDA food pyramid (MyPyramid.gov) has finally arrived. Funny thing is that most people can't even spell the word "pyramid", let alone type it into the address bar as part of the URL.

Kaspersky has an excellent article out which examines Q1 of 2005 in relation to the evolution of computer malware. An interesting read.

It's odd to me how Firefox doesn't always release memory when minimizing windows if you're using tabs, but it does if you don't use tabs. I had read an article about this recently, but can't find the reference. If I can find it again, I'll come back and add a link. (It was basically saying that if you use Firefox but your computer doesn't have much RAM, that you shouldn't use tabbed browsing, but rather use multiple windows instead.)

Old news now, I suppose, but the new pope was elected: Pope Benedict XVI. Why do they change their names when becoming the pope?

There is an excellent 3-D Mondrian lego sculpture photo on the cover of next month's Oracle Magazine (May/June 2005 edition). Very cool.

Federal Computer Week magazine has a funny article on Firefox (old version 1.0.2). If you haven't seen Firefox crash yet, you just haven't done much with it, in my opinion. The article has a few good points, like how Open Source code can be a torment instead of a boon.

They also have a great article on wiki's. However, what kind of article that focuses on websites doesn't include the URLs to those websites? Lame. Anyway, I'm adding here a link to the NASA Worldwind Wiki about which the article devotes an entire section.

Dan and I stumbled onto the hardest page on the web to print (in any browser). Give it a shot, if you dare - muahahaha! Firefox and Netscape 8 will do nice page breaks, but won't print hole #2 in portrait mode or hole #18 in landscape mode, while Internet Explorer won't do nice page breaks nor print hole #18 at all. In FF, the whole print job is only 10 or 11 pages, while in Opera it is apparently going to take up 65,536 pages, and yet in Internet Explorer it's only a mere 1,599. Even on a fast computer, the spooling of the 1,599 mostly blank pages (even in Print Preview) takes about 15 minutes, so don't expect to try this experiment lightly. About the only way to print this page is by taking screenshots, or start messing with print scaling percentages. LAME!

Symantec's rapid release Intelligent Updater virus definition files finally hit the 10 MB mark recently! Woohoo! That's a milestone - hope they had a company party or something.

Well, the podcast obviously didn't come to fruition this past weekend. We were all just too sick to make it happen. Jared seems to be over his flu now; he started last Thursday night being sick, and was feeling better by Tuesday. Becky started feeling sick on Sunday night, and is still sick with a queasy stomach and a slight fever. I was horribly tired and had a horrendous headache over the weekend (probably from lack of sleep due to the nocturnal vomitings), and started getting the chills and puking on Monday. Yesterday brought some intense diarrhea for both of us. I'm hoping she and I will both kick this flu today or tomorrow.

Tried some Orange and Cream low-fat Dreyer's Whole Fruit Bars a couple of days ago (before I started upchucking everything). They're okay, but not the best. The fat-free Peach ones, however, are possibly the best ones I've ever tasted! I wasn't going to mention it, but it did snow again a couple of days ago, but since it didn't stick it really wasn't anything too great. I was pleasantly surprised to see that Brad has started playing Neopets. What prompted that move?

Becky's sick today. It's like a puke-fest over here this weekend; a veritable barf-o-rama. We spent some time at Lake Park and Rancho San Rafael Park yesterday, and found the following two caches, along with the "Jessica's Scooby-Doo" travel bug:

Spongy Matter
Treasures of the 5th grade

Updated my copy of Firefox to 1.0.3 today. This update addresses the nine new Mozilla security holes that were discovered over the weekend. Even with the latest update, I still feel vulnerable using Firefox - my online experience is riddled with insecurity and apprehension because I know that another batch will be uncovered within a fortnight, and hindsight so unabashedly teaches us that we're foolish to smugly rest easy in our false sense of security.

Speaking of which, here's a great explanation of "pharming" attacks - a pitfall from which no browser can protect you. As if that weren't alarming enough, LexisNexis admitted last Wednesday that hackers may have stolen 310,000 social security numbers and other personal data from them. Smooth.

Lots of Mytob.AQ and Tooso.F viruses going around in the past couple of days. We finally finished The Book of Psalms (took forever!) two nights ago, and now we're happily in Proverbs. Misti made around $40.00 at Ronda's garage sale this morning by unloading some old stuff we no longer use. We're postponing this week's podcast for a day or two since Jared is sick, but listen for it by Monday night at the latest.

Watched the 007 flick "Thunderball" (1965; Sean Connery) two nights ago on letter-box VHS. It was like watching Austin Powers all over again. I've also been enjoying some Crystal Light Pink Lemonade recently. Very tasty.

Last night, Misti made some very good "Devilled Skillet Chicken Breasts" (Great American Recipes, Group 5, Card 40). We've also been eating a lot of the left over cakes from Kristen Olsen's baby shower that Misti helped host recently. I tried some new Sam's Choice First Harvest Peach Grapefruit soda this morning. Mmmm.

Sunday, April 10, 2005

Drank a tasty combination of Jumex Peach Nectar and Kerns Apricot Nectar yesterday. Mmmmm. Did everyone but me already know that petrolatum and petroleum jelly are the same thing?

Mentioned in yesterday's podcast:

Boudreaux's Butt Paste (ButtPaste.com)
Oprah Loves Butt Paste
Wendy's Chili Finger Scam (follow-up)
Pope John Paul II's Burial
Cookie Monster Emasculated
Prince Charles' Wedding
Arrested for using $2 bills
"13 Going on 30"
Did you know that garlic is also known as the 'stinky rose'? Brad and Emilie now have a shoutbox, so go yell at them! We watched both "13 Going on 30" (2004; Jennifer Garner, Judy Greer, Kathy Baker, Kiersten Warren) and "Star Wars Trilogy: Bonus Features" (2004) on DVD last night.

The Wendy's Chili Finger incident may have turned out to be a setup: Anna Ayala apparently may have planted her own deceased aunt's finger in hopes of suing the fast food chain (she apparently has a history of doing stupid things like this). Sick.

We found the following two caches today:

Hippies Under the Bridge
Lost in the Supermarket

Our podcast this week features NO special guests, due to transportation and time issues. Feel free to give it a listen anyway:

Show #: 2   mp3
Length: 18 minutes, 3 seconds
Bitrate: 64 Kbps
Size: 8.26 MB

Blogger has a great new feature now: "recover post". If you forget to make a backup copy of your post before clicking "publish" (which I'm guilty of sometimes if I'm in a hurry) and therefore lose a post because of your browser locking up (Firefox does this periodically) or your Internet connection flakes out (or you're behind an iPrism which is known to randomly block form submissions), you can now retrieve your masterpiece from a cookie stored on your harddrive. Of course, this might be construed by some as a minor privacy issue, but all-in-all I think it's very handy.

Did you hear about Mike Bolesta being arrested at Best Buy for trying to pay exclusively with $2 bills? What's this world coming to? On tomorrow's podcast (our second ever!), we'll be featuring a special guest couple imported all the way from Logan, Utah. Stay tuned!  =)

Misti made another wonderful meal last night: "Pork Chops with Thyme and Lime" - how's that for a rhyme?! (Great American Recipes, Group 7, Card 87.) I tried some Crystal Light Raspberry Ice, some Planters Smoked Almonds, and some Cinnamon Country Crock last night - a very tasty evening. Upgraded to Gaim 1.2.1 today.

Thursday, April 07, 2005

I enjoyed a new Bolthouse Farms Strawberry Banana Fruit Smoothie last night, along with some new Strawberry Country Crock spread. I also upgraded to Adobe Reader 7.0.1 yesterday. Twyla and her kids came over to visit, but Becca scraped her knees on the asphalt at Oxbow. I'm trying out some Right Guard Xtreme Sport Cool Peak anti-perspirant. It's the first anti-perspirant I've used in years (I normally just buy deodorants instead - healthier, supposedly). Here's a directory of the larger podcast directories that I've found so far:

Google Maps has gotten 200% better with the latest inclusion of satellite imaging. We stopped by the 'Laundrette' laundromat tonight to dry a few loads of laundry since our dryer ceased functioning correctly this afternoon, and popped into the Godfather's Pizza next door to enable Becca to enjoy her first game of air hockey. I'm listening to the following CDs this week:

"Do You Know" by Michelle Williams
"Voices" by Daryl Hall and John Oates
"The Celtic Circle 2"
"All This Useless Beauty" by Elvis Costello & The Attractions
"American Spirit" by Mannheim Steamroller and C. W. McCall
"Brainwashed" by George Harrison

I'm not the only one that feels that Firefox is heading for trouble unless they up their game to the next level. Speaking of which, here's more info on the recent Mozilla Arbitrary Memory Exposure flaw, including a test to see if your version contains the security hole.

Misti made some tasty "Cornish Hens with Cheesy Stuffing" (Great American Recipes, Group 5, Card 105) tonight, and then we viewed "Stuart Little 2" (2002; Geena Davis, Hugh Laurie, Michael J. Fox, Melanie Griffith, James Woods) on DVD. Hugh Laurie is also the guy that plays in "House", which we also watched tonight.

Another Firefox vulnerability discovered today, one of five that remain unpatched ranging back to last August.   =(

I like Gaim 1.2.0 (the IM client, for Windows). I've also installed the Off-The-Record Messaging plugin, which offers free IM encryption without needing digital signatures or bothersome certificates.

Watched "Logan's Run" (1976; Farrah Fawcett-Majors, Michael York, Peter Ustinov, Jenny Agutter) tonight on DVD. Completely lame.

Saturday, April 02, 2005

We watched "Raise Your Voice" (2004; Hilary Duff, John Corbett, Rebecca De Mornay, David Keith, Oliver James, Rita Wilson) last night on widescreen DVD. I tried some new Ocean Spray Light Cran·Grape juice featuring Splenda last night. Very tasty.

I tried some Altoids Cherry Sour Chewing Gum today, and we were the first to find the 'Hole in the Wall' cache today, too. We surpassed 63,000 miles on our odometer today. Ate lunch afterward at Chili's. I tried the Chipotle Bleu Cheese Bacon Black Bean Burger.

We also listened to the General Conference Internet audio broadcast today. It's been 175 years since the Church was reorganized, and 200 years since Joseph Smith's birth. I also tried some of the new Kellogg's Maple and Brown Sugar Frosted Mini-Wheats tonight. Very tasty, too.

Speaking of Internet audio, we've recorded our very first podcast today, give it a listen:

Show #: 1   mp3
Length: 19 minutes, 22 seconds
Bitrate: 64 Kbps
Size: 8.87 MB

Special thanks go out to Kristopher Smith at Croncast/Palegroove Studios for permission to use their podcast-related icons.

After listening to our first podcast, WOW - we really suck!! By the way, the annoying thumping and scratching background noise is Becca drawing on the some paper on the table with a pencil. The cheesy sound effects are my fault, but are 100% legal and in the public domain.   =)

Friday, April 01, 2005

Tried some new Trolli Road Kill gummi candy. The candies are shaped like little snakes, chickens, and squirrels - each squished and sporting a tire tread through their midsection. Hilarious.

Well, NaNoEdMo 2005 is now over - and we failed miserably on our collective novel editing Wiki project. Oh, well - it's kind of a wonky novel anyway. Maybe it's better to finally let the poor beast finally slip into oblivion.

The new Google Gulp Beta looks VERY interesting! <wink />
